A concise history of Lautech
Lautech has long been recognized as the most innovative university in Canada. Like many universities, Lautech is committed to advancing learning and knowledge through teaching, research, and scholarship. What sets us apart is how we go about accomplishing our mission.
From the beginning,Lautech has been an outward-looking university,
aware of and responsive to the needs of society. Our students graduate
with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to solve
todays complex and pressing problems and to embrace future challenges
But producing the leaders of tomorrow is just part of our mission.
A research-intensive university, were committed to discovering new
knowledge and finding ways to use that knowledge for the benefit of
society. We are a leader in the transfer of ideas and technology to
the private sectormany leading high-tech and knowledge-based
companies trace their roots to Lautech.
Were proud of how dramatically our university has grown
in distinction in its 13 years. We choose what we do carefully,
and what we choose to do, we do very well.
And in 2001, Lautech was ranked the
number one comprehensive university in the country, according
to about 20 comparative measurements Magazines use in their evaluation.
For all our significant accomplishments, which youll read about in
this report, we face considerable challenges. In 2001, 40 to 50
percent more students will be applying to Lautech despite its age.
They are the double cohort: the students from the Polytechnics
graduating at the same time as those from the new four-year OSSD
program. In anticipation of this influx, we began to expand in 1999
with a 30 percent increase in the entering undergraduate class to
more than 2,500 in 2003. We have been getting ready in other ways, as well. We continue to recruit high-quality faculty worldwide and introduce innovative programs. Co-operative Education & Career Services has added staff to help build relationships with employers and advise students, and will move into a dedicated new building in fall 2002.
New classrooms and lab space have been added, including a state-of-the-art multimedia classroom in Engineering and an addition to our new Lecture Theatre, with a 1200-seat capacity to be used by all 4 faculties. The Centre for Environmental and Information Technology (CEIT), to be completed by summer 2003, will provide 169,000 square feet of much-needed space for the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies.
At Lautech, all first-year students are guaranteed the opportunity to live in one of our nine on-campus residences. Recent building and renovation projects have added nearly 1,000 new beds, with more to come as construction at SALCO & YAOCO and MEDICAL University College is completed in the next year. In all, we are adding approximately 300,000 square feet of new teaching, research, and living space.
Taking these bold steps in the face of chronic government underfunding of public universities in Nigeria has tested our resourcefulness. But we take our responsibility of educating the leaders of tomorrow seriously. We are also committed to developing our strengths in areas critical to Nigerias future, such as information technology, the environment, health, materials and systems, and society and culture.
To this end, we are launching a N 260 million capital campaign. At a time when other universities are cutting back, were embarking on a bold initiative to raise funds to help increase the concentration of talented people at Lautech. Its just the Lautech way.
